The latest advances in ultrasound are 3D and 4D imaging. This technology makes it easy for the patient to view inside her body. It is also very exciting for new parents to see their baby for the first time. To create 3D images, an ultrasound system renders multiple slices of a subject, for example, a baby, uterus or ovary. The system then reconstructs the image in three dimensions.
Judge for yourself the difference between the old 2D (flat imaging), 3D and 4D (3D imaging with movement). Compare the three photos above. Real-time imaging is illustrated in the 4D fetal ultrasound shown above. It is easier to capture an image and view the baby, even with fetal movement.
